2020 Critical Care – What Every Hospitalist Needs to Know

This course will focus on core topics in critical care ranging from ventilator management, interventions for shock and sepsis, response to neurologic emergencies and use of point of care ultrasound. The day will emphasize interactive learning with many sessions centered around case-based discussion as well as opportunities for simulation-based learning.  The most recent evidence informing practice as well as current guidelines will be highlighted throughout the course.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be better able to:

  1. Implement strategies to manage complex patients with acute respiratory failure including determination of etiology and subsequent manipulation of mechanical ventilation
  2. Identify and manage basic and difficult airways including difficult to oxygenate and/or ventilate patients, utilizing bag-valve-mask optimally, and efficiently securing an airway
  3. Delineate the priorities in the management of patients with neurologic emergencies including seizures, stroke and intraparenchymal hemorrhage
  4. Demonstrate the ability to use point of care ultrasound both diagnostically and therapeutically in the care of the critically ill patient
  5. Integrate physiology and evidence-based guidelines in the management of common and less common forms of shock
