2024 Perioperative Essentials for the Hospitalist

The perioperative management of the surgical patient has evolved to become a critical component of hospital medicine.

This Advanced Learning Course will review the essentials of perioperative care, including risk stratification and management of core conditions such as cardiac, pulmonary, and renal disease, as well as diabetes and anemia. This course will equip the hospitalist in both the academic and community setting with the skills needed to care for the surgical patient.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be better able to:

  1. Explore key concepts in perioperative risk assessment and risk mitigation with a focus on inpatient care.
  2. Review perioperative management of common medical comorbidities such as diabetes and pulmonary disease.
  3. Discuss the collaborative role of hospitalists in perioperative medicine, including Surgical Co-Management.

    Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 3.50 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine's (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.
